One accessory that can make a big difference in your gauge readings when installing a diesel pyrometer gauge is GlowShift’s Drill and Tap Kit. Drilling and tapping into your exhaust manifold isn’t necessary for installing any EGT gauge, but if you’re looking for optimal gauge readings directly from the source then using a drill and tap kit is the way to go. This drill and tap kit includes a size R drill bit used to drill the hole for your boost sensor and/or EGT probe and also includes a 1/8-27 NPT tap that allows you to thread your sensor or probe into the drilled hole.
Before you even start the drilling process, it is important that you use a center punch to mark the location where you’ll drill the pilot hole. To install an EGT probe to the exhaust manifold, you will want to drill into the EGT’s turbo flange. As I mentioned above, a size R drill bit is used, but it is recommended start with a 1/8 drill bit and gradually step up in drill bit size until you reach the included size R drill bit. Once you have completed the drilling process, it is important that you remove all metal shavings from the exhaust manifold with a shop vacuum and magnet pen to prepare to tap the hole. Slowly tap the hole to 1/8-27 NPT using the included tap and when you’ve completed this step, remove the metal shavings once more and you’re set! Check out the video below to see the drill and tap kit in action!
As a large portion of the country is buried in snow, a countless number of emergency vehicles worked long, tireless hours to get the roads clear for everyone’s daily commute. Plowing thousands of tons of snow over a long period of time can take a toll on your 4×4 vehicle, especially the transmission. It is extremely important to be aware of your vehicle’s normal transmission fluid temperature levels so you can know when your vehicle hits the danger zone of the mid to high 200° Fahrenheit. If you reach and/or exceed these levels, it is imperative that you let your vehicle idle to allow time for the transmission cooler to cool the transmission fluid so you can resume your work. Ignoring these rising temperature levels and continuing to put stress on your vehicle could lead to catastrophic damage.
One way GlowShift can help you keep a close eye on your transmission’s temperature is by installing a transmission temperature gauge. GlowShift’s Transmission Temperature Gauges feature an electronic temperature sensor that produces unrivaled accuracy as well as stepper motor technology that drives the needle of each gauge for smooth movement. One innovative feature with our Black and White Elite Series Trans Temp Gauges that’s extremely useful is the programmable high and low warnings that will alert you visually and/or audibly when you reach the set temperatures. GlowShift includes all necessary sending units, mounting hardware, installation instructions, free lifetime technical support and a one year limited warranty with each trans temp gauge purchased.

The most important step of installing GlowShift’s Exhaust Gas Temperature Gauge to your vehicle is selecting the location of the EGT probe. To receive optimal statistics from your Pyrometer Gauge, it is recommended to install the EGT probe at the pre-turbo location of your exhaust manifold. Many users may tend to install the EGT probe at 12 inches past the location of the turbo which results in misleading temperature statistics. To show the difference between the two EGT probe locations, we installed two EGT probes to our test vehicle, 2006 Dodge Ram 5.9L 24 Valve Cummins with a 5 inch exhaust pipe. The EGT probe that was installed 12 inches past the turbo read about 300° – 500° F cooler than the EGT probe that was installed at the pre-turbo location, which read about 800° F. This is an extreme difference in the temperature being displayed on your gauge which is inaccurate from the actual performance of the EGT. If your EGT is running too hot and you are unaware, it can lead to major engine break down including burning oil which leads to coking and melting internal components such as the pistons and crack heads.
